all that trouble with the anti abortionists and then this:

It may sound morbid, even bizarre, but Sri Lankan scientists are going ahead anyway. In a bid to unravel the mystery behind Lanka's soaring suicide rate highest in South East Asia anatomists will soon start picking the brains of the dead

http://www.indiadaily.com/editorial/02-01d-05.asp

"An alarming 70,000 people have committed suicide from 1990 to 2000 in Sri Lanka, with an estimated 14 million suicide bids. The rate has increased by 10 times between 1950s to 1990s. To get to the root of the problem, we have decided to adopt a two-pronged approach. While the first would be an epidemiological study, the second one would involve taking brain cells of cadavers to zero in susceptible genes"

here are the stats in comparision with our poor neighbours, proving that its not totally for economic reasons that we die:
http://www.searo.who.int/en/Section1174/Section1199/Section1567/Section1824_8078.htm

and for details of a totally sucidal family read this
http://www.wsws.org/articles/2001/dec2001/sri-d28.shtml

yup, Sri Lankans are an inbred bunch but then does it mean we got to kill ourselves due to odd genes...seems so unfair on those lovely parents who take a lot of trouble in bringing us up, a slap on the face to your mother ....pregnancy, lactation ,stretch marks and sleepless nights , schooling ,education etc all thrown to waste.
Perhaps better family planning is the key so that we dont breed kids who wish they had never been born...

or maybe its just the price of petrol driving us round the bend...

pls comment at the entry below too...

14 million? Isn't that close to the total population of Sri Lanka? Damn...

Natural selection. Unfit terminating themselves.

I hate poor rural people. I know it sounds nasty but I can't stand them. I've been to this village when I was little and the kids were really rude and nasty. I wish the government would stop Samurdhi and crap so that they will all have no option but to kill themselves.

The country has no use for them. They are all unemployed and don't contribute to anything. They just fucking sleep at home and live on our tax money.

Total population is actually close to 20 million.
With regards to rural people, I think the government needs to educate them about how developing themselves and their lifestyles could actually help them; instead of giving things away for free. That never helps, nor does it set any standards or help them to grow.

main reason for suicides are being lack of sex. if governtment matching up suicidal males and femals and encouraging them to be sexing then problem going away no?

of course then new problem of overpopulation so better show them how to use condoms also..

I have the answer: imaturity, the 'i'll hold my breath till i get what i want' mentality taken a step too far, literally. Yes, our parents are two wishy washy with us. In the UK, they chuck newborn babes into the deep end of a swimming pool (did you know the instinct at that age is to hold your breath, paddle, swim?)! Could you ever imagine such a thing in Sri Lanka? Short and simple: our parents care too much.

N,yes 14 m during 10 years, something like 1.4 attempted suicides a year.

the first annonymous; about hating the poorer rural masses, well, Im sure the feeling is reciprocated :-)

second anonymous-
Nish, perhaps you should give up trying to hide behind anonymity, as your grammar gives you away. Also a suggestion – have you ever considered that you too may be needing "sexing".

Im inclined to agree with the immaturity argument. parents in this country spoil their kids so bad,(some guys I know are 40 and their mums are doing the laundry for them etc etc) that if something goes slightly wrong it feels like the end of the world...

i win, i win... win-win-win (peak-a-boo), i win! See: i'm making a stand for the more-mature-sri lankan-male. Next stop: those wishy-washy-mothers... (you first).
